Greeting Cards

On the day of  our presentation of the colour theory assignment, Miss Lisa did a short speech on our greeting card assignment. As it was quite late, and we were all tired from doing the presentation, Miss Lisa kept it short and told us briefly about the assignment. We were to make 3 greeting cards of the same theme, but on different occasions or different types of greetings. She told us to go back home and think about what theme we wanted to do. As the next week was a holiday week, we could not get back to her face to face, so she told us to facebook message her or email her for our idea proposals.

I went back and thought long and hard on what kind of theme I wanted to do. I did not want a theme in which a lot of people had done before or a theme that one of my classmates was bound to come up with. Looking around my room, I realized that I had a lot of craft items leftover from all my previous crafting work and from my previous assignments from Creative Thinking Skills Class. So, with the thoughts of recycling old craft products, I used crafting as a theme. The theme I proposed to Miss Lisa was an invitation to a craft party. I drew my 3 card ideas, and sent them to Miss Lisa through facebook messaging and waited for her reply.

When Miss Lisa replied me, she said that she liked the idea of a craft theme, but she told me to choose different occasions for it rather than it being an invitation. She also told me to keep the cards simpler, and not to fully utilize every blank space, as the cards that I proposed were way to busy both on the inside and the outside. I guess I did not do any research on greeting cards because I thought that I understand what a greeting card means. So, I followed my understanding of what Miss Lisa advised me to do and did the cards in a much simpler way. This time, instead of doing an invitation to all 3 of the cards, I did the cards as an invitation, a card that was meant to be sent to a craft giveaway winner, and the third one for a craft competition. Miss Lisa replied me, telling me that I did a good job in simplifying the cards. On the other hand, I still did not get the occasions right as the occasions called for greeting cards. She agreed crafts as a theme, but Miss Lisa emphasized on the fact that it was about greeting cards. She told me to reflect about it and give it a good think. Naturally, being a slow person, I still did not get what she meant, and I pondered  about it for a long time. I was worried that I would never get my ideas right, so of course I freaked out a little.

After thinking for a long time, I finally remembered that I could always ask others about this, so I decided to ask my friends and classmates through whatsapp. Slowly, they explained the concept of greeting cards, and I finally got the point of what a greeting card actually is. Not an invitation, but a simple greeting, such as "I miss you", or even some cheesy puns. So, since i finally got the idea of greeting cards, I could go on and think about more cards to make. I decided on making some cheer-up cards, and I proposed this idea to Miss Lisa once again through facebook messaging. I think Miss Lisa was beginning to get very annoyed at me always messaging her. The proposal on the cheering up was a little too late as Miss Lisa told us she would not accept any more proposals that day, but I still tried just in case. Miss Lisa was true to her word and she did not reply me, as I was late in sending her that proposal. But it was okay as we had classes the next day as it was after the holidays. I made some sample cards of the last proposal that I sent to her, and showed them to Miss Lisa during class. I was so happy that Miss Lisa liked the cards that I proposed to her and now I can finally get on to the next phase, which was making the actual cards. I tried making one of the cards on that day in class, but as we were finishing class, Miss Lisa came over to check on my progress, and she gave me some disappointing news, which was that I was using the wrong materials and that the card was too floppy, so all my hard work on making that card that day was gone, but it was okay as it was not too late to restart again.

After class, we went back home, and I bought some right materials for making my cards. I thought of a finalized of 4 cards that I was sure I wanted to make. I was worried that Miss Lisa would not approve of them, so again, I proposed the 4 cards to her. She replied saying that she loved the second card the most and that the others were cute as well. That reply was a green light for me to go ahead with my card making. It took quite awhile to make each individual card. The first card was a card with a line that goes "I want to be" with illustrations of "I" which was an eye, "1", "2", "be" which was a bee. I will post all the photographs below. Inside the card is "The shining stars to your darkest night". I planned to put glow in the dark stars in the card. The second card, which was Miss Lisa's favourite, was mostly made with thread, and I had to pasted each individual thread one by one, which took a very long time and a lot of my patience to do. The card goes "After the rain" with "Comes a Rainbow" on the inside, with thread rain and thread rainbow. The third card was the easiest to do, and I love it so much. It just says "You'd better smile now" on the outside with a smiley face with pop-out eyes, and "Or I'll tickle you" on the inside, with a single feather, symbolizing the tickle. The fourth and final proposal is the one I did not use, but instead, I used the concept of the rubber bands on the envelope of the third card. It says "Don't be mainstream" with all blue rubber bands around the words, and "Be You" on the inside with the same layout with all blue rubber bands, expect for a single yellow rubber band in the midst of all the blue ones, which means being unique. It takes quite awhile to glue all the rubber bands on the card.

The day of presentation came. I customized my envelopes and I did my last minute touch-ups on my cards. I found that some of the glow stars have fallen out, mainly just two of them. Luckily, I brought my entire packet supply of the glow stars, and I super-glued them back to where they were supposed to be. As Miss Lisa came to see my cards, I was so nervous that they will fall short of her expectations that I couldn't speak and could only nod and barely speak as Miss Lisa looked at my cards. I was not disappointed when Miss Lisa said that she loved them and that they were good. Indeed, her favourite one was the rainbow one, and she kept that card with her for now to show to the evaluator for the end of semester. The only flaw in my cards were very obvious, and I already realized them before Miss Lisa said anything. When I drew lines for the margins, I drew them too hard and could not erase them off entirely when I wanted to, so there is a faint shadow of the margins. But to my delight, Miss Lisa told me that because of my hard work on the details of he cards, the "ghosts" of the margins did not bother or annoy her as much as they would normally. I was still nervous and also overjoyed and shocked that she liked my cards enough to want to use them for evaluation that i just continued to stand there like a statue, being all awkward and weird. After the comments, Miss Lisa took photographs of each card along with the envelopes. She went around checking the last few card collections, and class was dismissed after that.

I have learnt a lot from this assignment, and I've had some amazing experiences, even though I had some difficulties too. Through all these difficulties, I have learnt to be more keen on research and I got better at my problem solving skills, especially when nobody was there to help me. Thank you Miss Maslisa for giving me all the advice and being so patient with me even when I am so annoying with all my questions and my millions of card idea proposals. I am very honoured that you would actually use my card as an evaluation. Thanks for teaching me, I have learnt a lot of new things from this class, and I enjoyed making the cards, even the envelopes. Moreover, I have also learned to be neater. I am still very messy, but my artworks have gotten neater since Miss Lisa's classes. My margins are better now than before. Last but not least, I am so happy when Miss Lisa told me that my words are nice during the second week tutorials, nice enough not to have to bribe my classmates to write for me in the card or to print out the words. That might be nothing for any other person, but to me, it was a very big compliment. Thank you, Miss Lisa!!!:)

MY FIRST EVER PROPOSALS:D

My Facebook message conversation with Miss Lisa. Thank you Miss Lisa for the feedback! You helped a lot for the cards to be made like they are now!:

MY Second proposals:

MY Third proposal (Finally accepted:)!)

Finalized 4 sketches for the final cards:

MY FINAL CARDS:
1.
Just a simple envelope for this one, using exacto knife to cut out the stars and the moon. Then I pasted a light yellowy paper below the black cut paper. The stars and moon on the envelope are just normal cut-outs but the stars and diamonds on the card are pop-out and the stars glow in the dark too.

2.
This is Miss Lisa's favourite!!! The blue sky with the sun is the envelope. The cloud is made out of felt. I originally wanted to put cotton balls as the clouds on the envelope, but it was too much and too busy. The rainbow has a kind of pop up feel to it as I did not superglue the threads on the paper, but I stuck both the ends of the thread behind the paper. I did not intend to do that at first, but somewhere along the line of making it, I thought of this idea, and it worked out. I really love how my ideas came out.

3.
The black one is the envelope. The idea was originally for the 4th card, but I changed it and made it into an envelope idea. The giant round eyes on th e card cover are non-slip things.

Colour Theory

Colour Theory

This week, we are learning about the colour wheel! We are separated into groups of 5 or 6. My group has 5 members including me. We were to do some research on colour theory and colour activities. During class, Miss Maslisa gave a lecture to us about colours. We learned about the basic colour wheel, primary, secondary, and tertiary colours that are in the colour wheel, and also some other things like the different colours and the mood they give out and how to mix colours that are pleasing to the eye. After the lecture, Miss Lisa wants us to discuss among our groups on what 3D activities we can do to express the colour wheel. She gave us a few examples in the slides she let us see during the last part of the lecture.

What my group members and I thought of in the group was a lot of random ideas, such as filling the entire Drawing / Design Room with paper and painting our feet and just walking or dancing on the paper floor in out painted feet in different colours. We also thought of closing off one section of the Design Room off and erecting temporary walls around that section then randomly throwing colour in balloons into the section blindly (since we cannot see the inside of the closed off section due to the temporary walls around it) and it will make a messy colourful canvas. Those ideas were thought of by Shifa and Wee Jie mostly. Although we love these ideas a lot, we realized that they don't represent the colour wheel, so we crossed the ideas off our list. Next, one of us, Botagoz thought of using cups and putting multiple cups around one main cup which will be in the middle of the entire thing. The cups surrounding that main cup will be arranged according to the colour wheel colours. Also, I thought of making a disco ball that reflects colours. Instead of using glass, we can do a coloured glass or mirror mosaic according to the colour wheel patterns around the ball and shine light on it to make a colour wheel disco ball. Shifa also thought of using glass paper in replacement of the mosaic glass, which was quite a good idea. At last we thought of fusing the ideas together and using the cups to surround the ball and providing light from the inside of the ball. But then we realized that we need electricity and a lot of wiring work to do for that, so just in case, we thought of another idea.

Somehow, Shifa  was suddenly intrigued by thread. So she thought of hanging thread from the cups in colour coding using all colours in the colour wheel accordingly. But then one of us suddenly thought of doing nail thread work. Using Sabrina's Macbook Pro, she researched about the thread nail art (Sabrina had been doing the research for all our ideas, including the paint splatter and the disco ball idea). We found so many awesome photographs and tutorials to do the diy and we really wanted to do it. Then, somehow, they found out about the awesome and beautifully made artwork done by a Mexican-Canadian Graphic Designer named Gabriel Dawe. It's the 6 Amazing Colour Spectrums Made From Thread. I will post the photographs below. We were inspired to do this amazing project, and from then, we almost immediately decided to so this and kept brainstorming ideas on how to actually do this in such a large scale and how to get so much thread and how to hang it up and other ideas.

After around one hour of group discussion, Miss Lisa went around to find out what every group has thought about. To our absolute joy, she accepted our idea on the nail thread colour spectrum art. She suggested that instead of doing it in such a large scale, we can actually do this in a smaller scale and use big frames that we could buy from ikea to hold the threads, and that was an amazing idea. She agreed that the disco ball cup idea was too much as it needed the wiring and electrical things. After that, she asked us to discuss on the materials of this group work assignment of ours, and also to discuss about where and how we want to display the artwork, and other necessary things we need to discuss about. Due to the large scale of all the groups assignments, Miss Maslisa said that we are given 3 weeks to work on this group assignment, so this week is week 1. After that and a few more discussions, we were free to go and Miss Lisa dismissed our class.

Below are the group discussion sketches we had drawn out for our various plans:

Below are the photographs of the thread art that inspired us to do our final idea:

The last few photographs, which I will post below, are roughly what we are going to do, but on a smaller scale and on huge frames:

Here are the links to the website that we found the photographs:

During week 2 of the group assignment, we were required to do our work by ourselves and there was no class. It was the week of out-of-class activities. Our group went to the Principles of Design classroom to meet up and punch holes into our mounting board frames. We originally wanted to use real wooden frames that are used to hang paintings and put nails around the frame to wrap the thread around, but when we searched up on buying frames, we found out that frames cost a lot, especially bigger sized frames like the A2 frames that we wanted to use, and we needed 12 of the frames too. So, stuck at a dead-end, we racked our brains for another way to get frames for our assignment. Bota came up with an amazing idea, which was to replace the frames that we wanted with mounting boards. We would have to cut out the middle part of the mounting boards to make mounting board frames, and that took a lot of time. We would also have to stack three frames together to make the frames more sturdy as mounting boards are not as stable or strong as wooden frames. Wee Jie and Bota went to buy the mounting boards and Shifa went to buy the thread. When they bought the materials, we could finally start with our main project, which was the making of the artwork. Since we could actually just do the assignment individually, we decided to split up and do our own parts at our respective homes. We discussed on how to split the responsibilities, and the result was that Shifa and I both have 3 threaded frames to make, while the rest have 2 threaded frames to make. As Sabrina was not feeling well, she went home. Bota also went home to do her work. Wee Jie stayed for a while, but also left shortly after that. Shifa and I stayed in the class to measure and cut our mounting boards until 6pm, when Shifa's driver arrived to pick her up, and i went back to my room to continue with the work. Cutting the thick boards, not only one, but nine of them, proved to be a very tiring job. My fingers were numb by the time I was done cutting around 3 boards, so I rested for a while and went to bath. I continued to do a few more that night and managed to thread one frame before going to bed. I continue the others after that day whenever I was free and had no classes.

One day, we found out that the thread was not enough to cover the entire frame, and only managed to cover only half the frame. We pondered on buying more thread to complete the frame, but after some thinking and discussing, we concluded that it was better that we left our work half finished, as when we hang them up in a row of 12, when we look from the frame that is in the most front to the back, we would be able to see all the colours, whereas if we fill up the entire frame, we would not be able to see the frames at the back as clearly. It was also somehow a style and the frames look nice hanging there not fully filled with thread. The frames do not look unfinished, but looked like we deliberately made them as they are, which we did decide to do.

Week 3 came, and the day of presentation arrived. We brought our respective frames to the Principles of Design classroom earlier than usual, and did a few last minute fixes, for example, we hot-glue-gunned the loose parts of the frames to make them sturdier, and we arranged the frames according to their colour. We originally wanted to place the frames on the table and prop them up with something, but when we arrived, we saw that the tables were very dirty and we also found out that the frames do not look nice being placed on a table. So, we decided to hang them from a pipe in the ceiling. A dilemma came when we could not find a spot to hang the frames up, because all the other groups had already booked all the spots. We thought long and hard, and finally came up with an idea of hanging them from the projector in front of the class to the object that hold up the rolled-up screen on the wall. I brought along some thread with me to hang the frames up, and we punched holes on top f each frame to put the threads. After that, Wee Jie helped us to hang the frames up. We had a huge complication and also aa huge shock when we saw that the projector actually moved from the weight of all the frames. We were so afraid that the projector would come crashing down due to the heaviness of all the 12 frames, but after some inspection, we later found out that the projector was meant to move. There was a lever holding the projector, and it was used to move the projector so that the light on the screen can be adjusted manually. All was well again. After that, we were ready to present our assignment, but we had 2 hours to spare. Since it was lunch time, we went to eat some lunch.

After lunch, we went back to class. Shortly after that, Miss Lisa arrived. We were so nervous as we wanted her to be pleased with our final artwork. We worked very hard on it, and we were stuck in many ruts during the process of this assignment, and had to improvise a lot of times. We did not want to disappoint Miss Lisa. To our delight, Miss Lisa liked our work. She even said that she could actually see our artwork hanging in an art gallery, which was a huge compliment to me, and that comment made my day. The only thing Miss Lisa suggested to improve our work was to put more thread on the frames that were at the back of the row, as in the front threads would be just a little bit of  thread, but as the frames gradually go further back, the threads are more and more, so that it will give a gradient effect on the entire outlook. Apart from that, Miss Lisa loved our work, and we were very happy with it too.

Paper Cut-outs

Composition Part 2: Paper Cut-outs

The first composition assignment was the Rule of Thirds video. Miss Lisa quite liked mine so I am quite satisfied with it, although she did say that some parts need improvement. But I know where I am wrong at after Miss Lisa points out my mistakes. After she finished checking everyone else's videos, we had a short break then we proceeded to the second part of the composition topic, which was paper cut-outs. This second assignment will take us 3 weeks to finish. This lesson is about paper cut-outs, and we have to do two A4 sized paper cut-out that have the same theme, one symmetrical and the other asymmetrical. For the first lesson that day, we were supposed to brainstorm for theme ideas for our 2 paper cut-outs. Miss Lisa showed us a few examples of the paper cut-outs from previous students and then we were supposed to draw out a rough sketch of our ideas so we can at least know what to do when we get home to draw out our finalized design. Those who have their ideas approved can go back home.

It was truly a bad day for me that time because I had no inspiration and I was somehow also very tired that day. I had two ideas but they were not good and they were not actually a good design student's material, as I had zero inspiration that day. The first idea was themed with hair, and that was actually the worst theme I could ever come out with, because it was too complicated as it was extremely difficult to show the texture of hair in paper cut-outs, so Miss Maslisa immediately rejected that idea, which left me upset and even more emotionally exhausted than before, but now that I have a clear mind, I completely understand why she did not agree with that theme. So I went back to my seat and thought long and hard, but I still could of think of anything at all. Finally, I came up with another idea, I quite liked it as it was simple, but that was where the bad side came in, because it was too simple. The idea I thought of was symmetrical this time. It was my two hands, with two paw-prints on my hands, one paw-print each. When I showed it to Miss Lisa, she was disappointed and she told me it was too simple, and I knew it too. Immediately after seeing my two failed attempts, Miss Lisa knew that there was something wrong. Somehow, she knew that I was having lack of inspiration that day and she could see that I was having trouble thinking of ideas and that I was very tired and exhausted, so she told me that I can be excused from class that day even though I had no ideas yet. She also told me to go home and get a good nights rest before waking up in the morning and have fresh ideas and inspirations. Besides, it was late, 7.30pm and class was supposed to end at 7pm.

After I went home, I had a great rest but when I woke up, no ideas came to me yet, but it was okay as I had a week to get inspiration. For the next few days, I went around thinking and looking for inspirations. Then one day, I was in the elevator going up to my apartment in The Boardwalk in Taylor's, and I saw a flyer in the elevator that has an illustration of a tree with swirling and curly vines coming out from the main trunk. That triggered my imagination to use the swirly vines as my theme. That was because it was beautiful, and it was also my style, as swirly vines are all I can make if you want me to do complicated designs, because I am more of a simple person. That night, I thought of a few styles that I could take from that concept of the vines, and there were quite a few that I liked, but at last I found one that truly represents me. After I had done that design, I still needed another one, and as the first one was asymmetrical, I had to design a symmetrical one. At that time, I thought of a pair of earrings that I have in my room, and they were perfect for the symmetrical design that I wanted to make. The earrings were a pair of sword earrings and they have a unique design to them that actually has the vine theme in them. I took out one of the earrings and drew it on the paper, but I added a few more swirls and designs on the drawing as I thought that the original sword earrings did not have enough of the swirls in them and it was too simple for a paper cut-out, so I improvised to make my design more interesting and unique, and it turned out quite well.

On the next lesson, we had to show our designs, both symmetrical and asymmetrical to Miss Maslisa, and she will tell us whether they are acceptable and where to improve them. My asymmetrical design is a hand holding a floating circle that as a tree with the swirly vines growing from the inside of the circle to the outside, as if trying to breakout from the circle. which it did. The circle represents the world and also represents my unknown future that I hold in my hands. The tree and its vines represent me, I am teling myself to break out of my shell, which is the circle, and take a brave leap forward, and take a chance at it. Miss Lisa approved that design and I was so relieved and happy that I finally had good inspiration after the dry spell the week before. My sword design mainly shows that through the sword, I am trying to be brave and, I quote my Introduction to Photography lecturer, Mr.Vinod, to "take a stab at it!". When it can to my sword design, Miss Lisa said that the design was too large and that it took up too much space. She told me to remember the main purpose of this assignment, which is on composition. There was a problem with composition in that design as the sides of the paper had too little empty space. But apart from that composition and space problem, Miss Lisa approved of my design and therefore, both my designs are approved and I can proceed to making my sword design smaller to fit the paper better and to have a better composition. So as Miss Maslisa checked my other classmates designs, I worked on redrawing my symmetrical sword design to make it smaller. That week, we could leave class a bit earlier than usual because during the previous week, we ended class later than usual, and Miss Lisa wanted to make it up to us. So all we needed to do was to show her our two final designs to be approved, and also show her some of our paper cutting skills with the "penknife", and we will be free to go after she had approved of our designs and paper cutting skills. As she had already approved of both my designs, I just showed her my paper cutting skills, and she approved and I was dismissed from class.

The week after that was the mid-semester break, so for that Thursday, we were to do our assignment at home. We had to cut out both the designs and paste them on an A3-sized mounting board each. I used whatever free time I had during the break to finish my assignments, including the paper cut-outs. I finished the rest of the sword design at home and used the "paper cutter" to cut the papers very carefully. It took a lot of patience but I finally finished cutting both my designs out and I am so proud of them. The week after the mid-semester break, we are supposed to present both our designs on their respective mounting boards in front of class and explain why we made the designs as they are and what is the meaning behind each design.

The week for presenting our work comes, Miss Maslisa graded our work. She is very pleased with all our work. When she came to my paper cutouts, she commented that she likes the composition in both my works. She said that the theme for my cutouts were not as strong as my other classmates, but I still did a good job. She also liked the fact that I kept it simple with only black-and-white, without all the colours and messiness.

Here are the photographs of my two designs and the inspirations of the designs:

This poster in the lift to the gym and U-Residences is the inspiration to my spiral theme.

This is the pair of sword earrings that inspired me to make the spiral-patterned sword cut-out.

These are my two paper cutouts:
This is the asymmetrical cutout. The ball represents the world, meaning that I have the world in my hands. I have my life and my future in my hands. It is up to me to nourish it and grow like the tree in the ball. Notice the tree breaking out of the ball. That symbolizes that I have to be brave and break out of my shell. Stop being confined only within the sphere, break out, there is so much more to me that I have not showed yet, and I need to show it, to wow everyone.

This is the symmetrical cutout. It is a sword. The sword symbolizes bravery. Like the previous design, it also shows that I need to be brave, like a knight holding a sword. To be brave to fight my own battles and never give up. Like the knight fights for his kingdom, I need to fight for my future. This is how it connects the two designs. From this explaination, you can see that my theme is actually bravery. However, physically, the theme is the spirals in both the designs.

Rule of Thirds

Composition: Rule of Thirds

For these past few weeks, Miss Maslisa taught us about the Rule of Thirds. The Rule of Thirds has some elements of photography in it, and that is why our assignment for this topic is to take photographs using a cut-out frame that we made ourselves and to make a video with it.

The first thing that Miss Maslisa did when she entered the class when the class started was that she set up her laptop to the screen in front of the class and shared a presentation slide about composition to us. As she showed us each slide, she explained the things in composition and taught us all we need to know about the topic. After the presentation and the slides, Miss Lisa told us to take our notebooks out and draw a rectangle on a page. Next, she told us to draw any object that we want to inside the rectangle. Most of us drew our objects in the middle of the rectangle, and very few of us actually drew the object at the side of the rectangle, which was what we were supposed to do if we knew about the Rule of Thirds. We did not, and that further proves her point that as designers, we should all learn the concept of the Rule of Thirds. Miss Maslisa explained to us about the Rule of Thirds and showed us another presentation slide on the Rule of Thirds. In the Rule of Thirds, photographers usually place the subject matter to the side of the frame, which was the rectangle in our case. This mainly shows that the subject won't be seen as immobile and therefore boring. She told us to draw another rectangle and this time to put 2 lines across the inside of the rectangle equally, both horizontally and vertically. There are four intersecting points after we do that, and the lines separate the picture into one third both horizontally and vertically, while the intersecting points can be a guide for us to put an important thing or our subject matters at. After that, Miss Lisa gave us a short five minute break to absorb the information that she had just taught to us.

After the five minute break, Miss Lisa continued the lesson by showing us some videos on the Rule of Thirds that some of our seniors, students from another intake of Foundation in Design had made for the class assignment, with various different subject matters. The videos were interesting and they all have very different ways to make the videos interesting. Some use a storytelling concept for their video and some use stop-motion, while others just use normal photographs and piece them together to make a video that is still interesting. I hope that I will be able to do that for my video. After the videos, Moss Lisa told us that we had to do the same assignment too. Even if we already guessed that it was to be our assignment, we still groaned and complained like any other person would do at the sign of work. First of all, we started our assignment by using an A4 sized mounting board and cutting out the middle of the mounting board using a penknife and a cutting board (or the facilities of the classroom that allows you to cut the mounting board without damaging the table) to make a handmade frame. After we had all cut out our mounting boards, Miss Maslisa told us to write down a list of objects that we might want to use as our subject matter of this video assignment that we are going to do. We were given around ten to fifteen minutes to list down the objects that we might potentially want to be our subject matter. Here is my list of potential subject matters:

-Marcus Flippy (my toy turtle)

-Gary the snail (toy; from SpongeBob)
-Earphones / Headphones
-Sunglasses
-Piglet (toy; from Winnie the Pooh)
-Orange Queen eraser given to me by a friend, Cigie (She bought it from Taiwan; souvenir)
-Badges
-Hair
-Jewelry
-Smiles

After around fifteen minutes, Miss Lisa went around class from table to table to help us to choose one object in our list to be the subject matter in our video. When she reached me, she chose Marcus Flippy, my toy turtle as my subject matter, and I am quite happy with that choice.

After everyone was chosen one subject matter, Miss Maslisa asked the entire class to do some outdoor, or out-of-class work. We were to go outside and try out the new concept that we learned in class, which was the Rule of Thirds, with our camera phones and with our respective cut-out frames. For those of us who have our subject matters with us, we were to bring along our subject matters with us outside and take some photographs of the subject matters with the Rule of Thirds concept and the frame. We have the Rule of Thirds grids on our camera phones, and we were supposed to use the grids in our camera phones to take the photographs with the Rule of Thirds concept. For those who do not currently have their chosen subject matters with them at that moment, they can practice, try out, or apply what we had been taught in class by taking photographs of anything to temporarily replace their original subject matter. This is just for Miss Lisa to see if we really understood what she taught us during class about the Rule of Thirds.

After one and a half hours of out-of-class work, we went back to class to show Miss Lisa the photographs that we had taken outside and she gave us some feedback and corrected us if we were wrong, whether if our work was accurate or that we need to change some things in our photographs. After our work had been seen by her and she had given us her feedback, we were free to go back home and class was dismissed for that day.

The next week, there was no classes in campus as it was an off campus work for us. Week 8, which was the week before, was the in-campus work because we were to take photographs using the Rule of Thirds within the campus compounds. So, during the week after, which was week 9, we were to take the photographs off-campus, which was outside the campus compounds either in our homes, or somewhere outside of the campus. As I am currently living inside the campus itself, in U-Residences, my home is the campus, so for the off-campus work, I just went around the entire campus and also the commercial block to find some good places to take photographs of my subject matter. I look like a freak carrying my toy turtle and the frames around taking pictures of the toy, but I just did it because it was an assignment and I had to finish my work. I had to be brave for design!!!

During week 10, we were supposed to go to class and show Miss Lisa the work that we had accumulated so far, but we were misinformed and thought that there was no class that day, so we did not go to attend class that week. There was a barbeque dinner that we were attending with the other Foundation in Design students who are from other intakes and we were supposed to mingle around with them and get to know them. The dinner clashes with the last half of the class time, so we were informed wrongly that we were to have no class. By the time we found out that there was classes, it was already around 4pm, which was the time that the dinner starts, so it was already too late to attend class. We felt very bad and guilty, so we sought out Miss Maslisa and apologized to her as a class. Miss Lisa was so kind and understanding, she forgave us for missing the class and told us what to do for the next class. She told us that when we get back home, we were to complete the assignment, which means that we had to complete the video and post it on our blog by the next class. We also have to update our blog, from the first class to the most recent week, which was week 10. Miss Maslisa will check our blog and video the following Thursday.

Furthermore, Miss Lisa also told us that if we have any questions or troubles with our assignment, we should not hesitate to contact her through anywhere we can find her, whether it is through Times, Facebook, email, or even calling, texting(messaging) or whatsapping her. We could also look for her in person and talk or discuss with her face to face, if we find the need to do that.

Overall, I took a lot of photographs that I personally think are pretty good and I am quite proud of them. It took me an entire day to take all those photographs at the correct position and parallel to the frame. I am quite happy with my 'achievement' and I hope that all my hard work pays off, and I hope that Miss Lisa will love the video that I have done, along with all the photographs. I actually never thought that I could do it because it requires a lot of patience to take the photographs, especially the stop motion ones, and it take a lot of patience to hold the frame at the perfect alignment with the phone's camera lens, and it takes up a lot of my strength and energy to hold the frame with one hand and hold the phone in the other hand perfectly still without moving or shaking the phone. If the photograph comes out blurry or slanted or not in line with the frame, I had to take the photograph all over again. It is very difficult to do that, especially when I was sick with a stuffed head (headache)  and the flu that was so bad that I barely could breathe. But through all that, I managed to take pretty pictures that I am proud of, and I really hope that Miss Maslisa will like the video and be proud of me too!

I have just uploaded the video on YouTube. It is titled "The Adventures of Marcus Flippy", posted under my YouTube name "Casey Casey". Enjoy the video!!!

Art Movements: De Stijl

ART MOVEMENTS

These past few weeks, Miss Maslisa had been teaching us about art movements. An Art movement  is  a tendency  or  style in  art with a specific  common philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a  restricted period of time,  (usually a few months, years or decades) or,  at least, with the heyday of  the movement defined  within  a number  of  years.  Art  movements  were especially important in modern art  when  each consecutive movement  was considered  as  a  new avant-garde. There  are  myriad types  of  art movements,  for example,  the  more  well-known  art movements  are   abstract art,  surrealism,  realism,  pixel  art,  pop  art,  modernism,  fauvism,  and impressionism. The entire list of art movements that I have found on wikipedia are listed below, and you can check them out by clicking on them for further knowledge of these art movements:

.           In the first week of learning art movements, Miss Maslisa's assignment for us was too study about all the art movements and choose at least 3 art movements that we are interested in, and do a sketch (we can choose to colour or not to colour the sketches) for these art movements. We were to present our sketches to her individually during the next class tutorial and explain about our interests in the particular art movement. After that, she would choose the best art movement that we could go for in the long run. I chose abstract art, op art (which is short for optical illusion), geometrical abstract art, and minimalism. I presented my sketches to Miss Maslisa and explained why I like these art movements. After analizing my work , my explainations, and my knowledge of these art movements (which is not much, by the way), Miss Maslisa told me something that suprised me a lot. She told me that most of what I had sketched was connected to an art movement called De Stijl, which was an art movement that I had never heard of until then. But it turns out that it is in the list in wikipedia. So it was decided then that De Stijl is my art movement and I was quite happy with it.

After class, I went home to study more about De Stijl. It turns out that De Stijl is a very interesting art movement. De Stijl is a Dutch pronunciation for "The Style". It is also known as neoplasticism. De Stijl was a Dutch artistic movement founded in 1917 in Amsterdam. Proponents of De Stijl advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; they simplified visual compositions to the vertical and horizontal directions, and used only primary colours, which are red, blue and yellow, along with black and white.  In general, De Stijl proposed ultimate simplicity and abstraction, both in architecture and painting, by using only straight horizontal and vertical lines and rectangular forms. The works avoided symmetry and attained aesthetic balance by the use of opposition. This element of the movement embodies the second meaning of stijl, "a post, jamb or support"; this is best exemplified by the construction of crossing joints, most commonly seen in carpentry. In many of the group's three-dimensional works, vertical and horizontal lines are positioned in layers or planes that do not intersect, thereby allowing each element to exist independently and unobstructed by other elements. De Stijl was influenced by Cubist painting as well as by the mysticism and the ideas about "ideal" geometric forms (such as the "perfect straight line"). The De Stijl movement was also influenced by Neopositivism.

Miss Maslisa's next assignment for us was to draw a self-portrait of ourselves using the art movement that we had chosen. We were to draw the self-portrait on A3 paper and let her assess it during tutorials the next week. I went back and finished my self-portrait on Sunday as I had free time then for doing assignments. Throughout the week until that Thursday, I touched up my work little by little. When Thursday came, I was nervous to let Miss Maslisa see what I had done with my De Stijl self-portrait. When it was my turn, I showed her my drawing and she quite liked it! YAY!!! But, she said that my face in the portrait was not defined enough, so she asked me to go home and touch up on that area. When class ended, Miss Maslisa told us that we had to do our self-portrait on better quality A3 paper, which was probably around 230grams. I had done my self-portrait on an A3 paper that was lighter than 230grams, so I had to go back and redo the entire thing again. So, that was my assignment for that week.

We had to pass up our work the next week, and I had a workload of assignments to do as well as the assignment Miss Maslisa gave me, such as Introduction to Photography, Creative Thinking Skills, and English class, so I was quite worried that I could not get the drawing done by the next Thursday. Furthermore, I also had a 3 days 2 nights TUCF camp coming up that weekend, which basically means that my weekend is packed and I have even more limited time to do my assignments, and there is no way I could have took a 230grams A3 paper to camp and do my assignment there, because the paper was too big to lug around everywhere, and I also did not want to dirty the paper or crumple it as the camp we were going to was quite rural and not that clean. But I had a great experience at the camp and I do not regret it. Thankfully, God knew that I needed more time in doing the assignment that Miss Maslisa gave us, and the next Thursday turned out to be a holiday. So I spent the entire day of that holiday doing my Principles of Design assignment, and I managed to finish it and even got to touch it up some more during the days in between the class and that day.

We had to put the self-potrait up on a A2 or A1 sized mounting board, and present our work in front of the entire class during that day of tutorials. I was nervous and scared because I am not the type to speak in front of a crowd, even a small crowd like the class. We had to speak about what we understand about the art movement we were working with and also the reason why we made our self-portrait as we had made it, it's kind of like the story behind the self-portrait that we had drawn and how we portray ourselves through that self-portrait. I am not good at speaking to crowds, and I am pretty sure that what I have is called stage fright. But everyone had to do it, so I just took a deep breath and did it. I was also nervous because I did not know if my face in the self-portrait will be defined enough for Miss Maslisa's liking. It turned out that my speech was not bad and that Miss Maslisa liked my work, so I am very proud of what I did.

At first, I did not think that I will have the patience to do such difficult and complicated artwork, especially when I found out that I had to redo the entire self-portrait from scratch. But I had found out that I do have the patience to do it, and my work actually turned out great. I thought that my work would me ugly, but I had proved myself wrong. Last but not least, I had thought that I would never be able to explain the meaning behind what i had drawn in front of the class, but it turned out that I could and I did it. I stuttered a little, but I was able to bring out my message, and what I had wanted to say to the class and to Miss Maslisa. I am so happy that Miss Maslisa liked my work, and I will continue to work hard and be better and better than I am right now at this moment.

These are my first sketches for the 3 or more options of art movements that I have chosen. They are also known as the rough sketches or the first copies:
Top: Op Art (No finalized result, I decided not to use that drawing for the tutorial)
Middle & Bottom: Minimalism (originates from De Stijl)
[I had to choose either one of the two drawings because they are similar and there is no need  to draw both as they are almost the same, so at last I chose the middle drawing for the tutorial]

Upper left: Abstract Art (originates from De Stijl)
Lower left: Geometrical Abstract Art
Right: Op Art (Optical Illusion)

These are the finished sketches that I presented to Miss Maslisa during tutorials to choose which is my main art movement :
This is the sketch on minimalism. But Ms.Lisa told me that it actually originated from the art movement De Stijl, which was later chosen as my art movement.

This is my sketch on Abstract Art. Ms.Lisa also told me that it originated from the art movement De Stijl, which I have grown to like a lot.

This is my sketch on Geometrical Abstract Art. I quite like it, but after getting to know and experiencing De Stijl, I love De Stijl even more.

This is my sketch on Op Art, which is the art of optical illusions. As you can see, it is not really my thing. So obviously it was the first to get crossed out of all my art movement options.

My self-potraits:
This is the first self-portrait I drew. As you can see, the face is not very well-defined.

This is the final self-portrait. The face is much more defined and it also looks more complete, especially with the mounting board that acts as a frame.

First Week of Principles of Design class

10.4.14 (Week 2)

Principles of Design

Today during class, Miss Maslisa gave us a short lecture on the introduction to the Principles of Design classes that she will be teaching us. She also introduced herself to us and told us a few rules to follow in her class. In return, we too had to introduce ourselves to her and to the rest of the class.

We had to introduce ourselves in a special way, which was to do a self-portrait of ourselves using an A3 paper, elements of nature and rubbish (for recycling use). We also have to draw out a creative mind-map of ourselves on a piece of A3 paper. Miss Maslisa gave us around 2 hours or more to prepare our work, which was to draw the mind-map and create the self-portrait of ourselves.

After Miss Maslisa gave us the instructions to the activity, we all went out to search for objects from nature, such as leaves, flowers, and sticks for our self-portrait. We spent quite a lot of time collecting the nature objects and had fun while doing it. We finally went back to class to begin our activity on drawing the mind-map when it started to drizzle.

We immediately started on our mind-map after we went back to the Design Room. It took me almost two hours to design and draw the mind-map about myself, but it was worth it as I liked the results of what I did to it, especially all the colours I put there. Next I had to rush to make my  nature-inspired self-portrait as I had used up most of the given time doing my mind-map. But I managed to finish it in time for the presentation.

When the time for me to present my portrait and mind-map, I was really nervous and Miss Maslisa saw it in me too. I have to brush up on my body language and confidence. But on the bright side, she liked my mind-map and she liked how I placed a long piece of dried brown grass as the exterior of my hair. Overall, everyone presented quite well and the class was interesting.

After the presentations, Miss Maslisa taught us about art movement and the types of art movements. She gave us some assignments to do, such as do our research on art movement and find the types of art movements that suit us, and draw a sketch on the art movements that we think suit us. We are also required to make a blog, like this one that I'm doing right now. Class was interesting and fun and the time just flies by so fast, but by the end of the day, we were all exhausted but happy at the same time.

This is the cover of the Principles of Design class' sketchbook that I drew. It was originally boring and  plain black colour, so I decided to beautify it and the result is the picture above.

This is a photograph of the mind-map that I made during class to present to Miss Maslisa and to my coursemates. As you can clearly see, I like to put a lot of colours in my work.

This is a picture of the self-portrait made out of leaves and other natural ingredients that I made to present with the mind-map. Not my best work but I am quite proud of the results.
